10 things Hamburg has to offer in summer
It’s summer time! And we‘ll show you 10 things you should do in Hamburg when the sun is out.
Whether by pedal boat, sailboat, canoe or even surfboard for stand up paddling: the Alster and its many canals are the perfect place for a sunny day. Or you just chill by bathing your feet in the cold water and enjoy a drink at the café „Alsterperle“.
2. City Park
Have a BBQ with your friends, playing frisbee, go swimming, reading a book or just chilling – you can do everything in our beautiful city park on a sunny day. How perfect that he’s only a few minutes away from us! So what are you waiting for? Call your friends, grab a big blanket and off you go!
3. Open Air Concerts
With summer time our beloved open air season starts again, because having a party outside is even more fun! Whether in the city park, at „Neuhöfer Damm“ or on the Entenwerder peninsula, Hamburg has a lot of beautiful places for open air concerts.
The port of Hamburg and the Landungsbrücken also have a lot to offer during summer, e.g. the beautiful view of the Elbphilharmonie or the famous harbour cranes. But did you know that you can use your HVV ticket (public transport) also for a ferry trip to Finkenwerder? It’s a great alternative to the classic harbour boat trip, because during the trip you can see many sights along the elbe river…
5. Ice cream all day
When the sun is shining and the temperatures rising there’s only one thing to do: eat ice cream – all day, every day! Whether you’re the sweet, fruity or vegan ice cream type, there’s something for everyone at Hamburg’s ice cream bars. And if you don’t know where to go you, can read our last blog post from June. We explained where you get the best ice cream in Hamburg.
6. Sunbathing and watching ships on the Elbe beach
On the Elbe beach Hamburg shows its relaxed side. Here you can see a lot of different people, e.g. students barbequing, families or businessmen in suits enjoying a beer after work. The view into the harbour with its cranes is unique and it’s fun to watch the container ships passing. If it gets too hot in the sun you can cool off with a lemonade at the „Alsterperle“.
7. City park „Planten un Bloomen“
The park „Planten un Bloomen“ is centrally located between the exhibition halls and St. Pauli in the middle of the city. With its various theme gardens, miniature golf, playgrounds and small cafés, it is an inviting place to relax, especially on sunny days. And the best: in the summer months you can see the great water light games with classic music every evening from 10 p.m. – free of charge!
8. „Altes Land“ (The old country)
You’re in the mood for a trip to the countryside? „Altes Land” in the southwest of Hamburg is Europe’s largest fruit-growing area. You can find apples, cherries, plums, raspberries and many other fruits here in summer. A bicycle tour is the perfect way to cycle along the dikes and explore this beautiful area.
9. „Niendorfer Gehege“ (The enclosure in Hamburg Niendorf)
In the northwest of Hamburg, only 5 km (as the crow flies) away from the town hall, the Niendorf enclosure is located in the middle of many houses. Those of you who have had enough of the hustle and bustle of the city can retreat here wonderfully. The Niendorf enclosure offers beautiful hiking trails, playgrounds and a small enclosure with deers and foxes.
10. A day trip to the baltic sea
Fortunately, you don’t have to drive long from Hamburg to get to the sea. For example, there is the „Lübecker Bucht“, which can be easily reached by car in just one hour. Especially beautiful is the beach of Travemünde, the Timmendorfer beach and the beach of Scharbeutz.
