Port Anniversary 2019
Happy 830th birthday!
This year we are celebrating the 830th port anniversary in Hamburg. Wow, our beautiful harbour is already 830 years old… But do you know how this great event has come to life? No? Here’s the explanation:
The port anniversary goes back to the legend of Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa, who already lived in the 12th century. On May 7, 1189 he granted a tax exemption on trade in the Hamburg port area. So the gate was open and this decision soon proved to be the turning point in Hamburg’s rise to power. Every year since 1977 this special anniversary is celebrated on a weekend around the 7th of May and has grown into the biggest harbour festival in the world – thanks to the Emperor!
But what can you expect on this special weekend in May?
Here is a first look:
The harbour festival traditionally starts at 12 noon with the International Ecumenical worship in our St. Michael’s church, known as „Michel“. At 2 pm the museum ship „Rickmer Rickmers“ will ring its bell and the grand arrival parade will open. Ships from all over the world are welcomed with salute shots. Look forward to more than 300 ships which celebrate the largest harbour festival in the world. The six-kilometre-long promenade between HafenCity, Landungsbrücken piers and the St. Pauli fish market is filled with stands and podiums to celebrate the Port Anniversary. Vendors offer everything from local specialties and handicrafts to drinks so you can toast the harbor on its ‘birthday’. Live music and more get the party started early and keep it going late into the night.
Also on Saturday many attractions await you in HafenCity and Speicherstadt. The tugboat ballet at 6.30 pm is always a highlight. Classical music accompanies the boats on their pirouettes with 5,000 hp. Don’t miss the spectacular AIDA firework show that lights up the skies over Hamburg’s port on Saturday night of the celebratory weekend. Cruise ships join in the festivities with laser lights and horns.
After three days of program with music on the stages at the harbour mile, ship inspections and much more, the port anniversary will be over again. A grand departure parade on the Elbe will conclude the great party. The spectacular finale with more than 300 ships starts at 4 pm – you shouldn’t miss this either. And if you still haven’t had enough of partying, you can enjoy live music and treats from all over the world until 9 pm.
If you want to experience the harbour birthday live, we advise you to be quick. The weekend is very popular and most hotels are almost fully booked.
So what are you waiting for?! Book a room now and come visit us in May. Or as real Hamburgers would say: Nich lang schnacken, just do it!
